Remembering R. D. Skillings

Provincetown author and member of HomePort Press, R. D. Skillings, died January 16th, 2020. His beloved wife and daughter were at his side. Roger was a well-known chronicler of Provincetown and a mentor to many writers. He moved to Provincetown in 1967, became one of the first Fine Arts Work Center Fellows (1969 – 1971), then joined the Writing Committee, where he was instrumental for many years. A recognized figure around townfamous for his endless supply of green T-shirts and one-dollar “flip-flops”Roger was known for many things: his profound insights, penetrating wit, and ability to translate the many layers of Provincetown into engaging prose.  Most of all, he was known for his powerful commitment to justice and equality.

We at HomePort Press wish to express our condolences to his wife, Heidi Jon Schmidt, and daughter Marisa. Roger was inherently modest and self-effacing, yet he allowed himself one indulgence: his pride in them.

Roger’s last book of short stories, The Washashores, was published in 2018.
